The Alphabet Explorers is a short workshop series that I ran with three different primary schools from London and Cornwall. The series was about exploring how children of different ages view letterforms and type design as unbiased minds. The series included a texture- and shape-based workshop, two abstract collage workshops and describing word workshop. In each workshop the children created a complete A–Z and in some a 0–9 as well, I then turned these into poster outcomes for them using screen printing and riso. I gifted the Alphabet posters to the classes so they could admire the work they created.
These alphabets also led to possible uses for the custom typefaces designed by the children, including school T-shirts and leavers’ hoodies, as well as a colouring book that also included their testing. The colouring book allows the shapes to be reinterpreted by all ages and add new elements to the letterforms’ design.
